The search for a successor for Bert van der Spek, Professor of Ancient Mediterranean and West Asian History at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is now open. The position will be a part-time (80{518531fadeb811ae8faec8ba5977a8511c844f925d504d488b0d90b6c297e400}) tenured position, full professor, or tenure track for less experienced candidates. While the field of specialization is open, we expect the successful candidate to teach a broad and interdisciplinary perspective of the ancient world, including the ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern cultures.
The main duties include research in the field of Ancient Studies and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in ancient history, historiography, and society of ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern civilizations. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to engage actively in the development of a joint BA program of VU University and the University of Amsterdam within the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA), and to apply successfully for external funding for PhD-students and post-docs. The appointment is anticipated to begin on September 1, 2014. Applications should be sent in before 29 November 2013.

Requirements
The prospective professor:
- Has a PhD on an historical topic in the field of Ancient Studies;
- Has an international reputation in his/her field;
- Is fully committed to a broad interdisciplinary approach of the Ancient World and able to establish productive connections with other academic disciplines within the department;
- Has an excellent international publication record;
- Has an extensive international network, as evidenced by participation in international research projects and research networks;
- Is a committed lecturer who provides inspiring teaching (positive teaching evaluations);
- Has experience in developing new teaching programs;
- Has experience in the supervision of PhD-students;
- Has a proven track record of acquiring external research funding;
- Has evident communicative and organisational skills and proven experience with administrative tasks;
- Foreign candidates are expected to learn Dutch within two years as well as be fluent in English.
