Change of editor

At the 68th RAI held in Leiden we announced that Stefania Ermidoro is retiring from her role as Editor of Mar Shiprim. Since taking up the post in 2019, Stefania led several wonderful initiatives to bridge the gap between the various disciplines in Ancient Near Eastern Studies and to open them up to the public. We thank her for her creativity and hard work!

Following a rigorous selection process, the Board decided to appoint Pavla Rosenstein as the new Mar Shiprim Editor. Pavla is a graduate student in Assyriology with extensive editorial and communications experience. We very much look forward to working with her as she develops new content.

Introducing the new editor

Pavla is currently a fourth year PhD candidate in Assyriology at Yale University. She completed an MA in Technology as a Cultural Form at Goldsmiths College, University of London and a BA (Hons) in History, Cambridge University. She is particularly interested in social and economic histories and integrating ancient history into a broader understanding of humanity and society.

Prior to her PhD, Pavla worked in media and communications, serving as fashion editor for Clash magazine and developing communication strategies for a range of non-profit organizations including the UN and the British public broadcast Channel 4. She is passionate about public outreach and pedagogy, and has produced content for the Yale Babylonian Collection’s social media, including introductions to studying Akkadian and Sumerian languages. With Cécile Michel she also co-facilitated a workshop on public outreach and pedagogy at the 2023 RAI in Leiden. In 2023-24, she is serving as the McDougal Graduate Teaching Fellow at Yale, working to make college-level teaching more equitable and inclusive.

“I am very grateful to the IAA Board for entrusting me with the wonderful tradition developed at Mar Shiprim by prior editors Stefania Ermidor and Sophus Helle. I am excited to help the publication grow as an engaging and accessible communication channel for scholars across the broad range of disciplines connected to the study of ancient Mesopotamia, as well as for students, prospective students and the public!” says Pavla.

Mar Shiprim is open for submissions. Please send research, conference and workshop announcements as well as suggestions for new content to marshiprim@iaassyriology.com
