Tasks
· The lecturer is teaching Akkadian on all levels as well as the political, social, legal and literary history of the Ancient Near East. The teaching language is English.
· The lecturer will work within the Department of Archaeology, Classics and Ancient Studies. The teaching period of the Dutch academic year starts in September and ends in June. January and June are periods in which exams take place and in which students write and submit term papers and theses.
· The teaching load lies between 4 and 8 hours per week, depending on the ‘period’ = 2 months.
· The lecturer will also guide BA and MA theses,
· The lecturer participates in administrative tasks in the department (approximately 80 hours per year administration).
· Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to engage in the development of a joint BA program of VU University and the University of Amsterdam within the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA).
Requirements:
The prospective lecturer
· has a PhD in Assyriology (preferably with a focus on the 2nd or 1st millennium) at hand by 1 September 2014, or has at least submitted his/her dissertation at the time of application
· has experience in teaching Akkadian and ancient Near Eastern subjects;
· is an enthusiastic teacher who provides inspiring teaching and relates to students easily;
· has excellent communicative skills and can work in teams;
· has a very good passive and at least basic active knowledge of Dutch.
Salary
The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, salary scale 11 (gross income € 3259 – € 4462 for a full position (1,0 fte), depending on the years of post-doctoral work experience). Further particulars
The faculty of Arts offers a part-time (0,6 fte) position of Lecturer (Docent 3) in Ancient Near Eastern Languages and Cultures (Assyriology), starting at 1 September 2014. A contract is given for one year initially and after positive evaluations will be prolonged for a longer period (3 or 4 years).
