The Department of Near Eastern Studies at the Faculty of Philology and Cultural Studies invites applications for a position of University Assistant in the field of Ancient Near Eastern Studies, with a focus on Assyriology (PhD). The position, which is half-time (50{518531fadeb811ae8faec8ba5977a8511c844f925d504d488b0d90b6c297e400}) is offered for the duration of 6 years, beginning at the first of march 2014 or the earliest convenient date thereafter. Prerequisite for the application is a doctoral degree (PhD) in the field of Ancient Near Eastern Studies (philology: Sumerian and Akkadian); one main focus of research should be in the third or second millennium BC. In addition to teaching and independent research, the successful candidate will participate in the administration of the department and its library and will contribute intensively to the bibliography project “Register Assyriologie” (AfO) and to departmental projects in the field of Digital Humanities.

Extent of Employment: 20 hours/week
Occupation group in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc)
On top of this relevant chargeable work experience determines the assessment to a particular salary grade.

Profile:
– PhD in Ancient Near Eastern Studies / Philology (Sumerian and Akkadian), one main focus of research should be in the third or second millennium BC
– Proof of excellent communication skills (oral and written communication)
– computer & IT: ability to work with standard programmes
– Foreign languages: Excellent knowledge in German and English; – Ability to work in teams

– Knowledge of university structures and processes
– Experience in project work, esp. in the area of Digital Humanities
– Re IT and computer-related competences, excellent text and image editing skills and experience with manuscript editing would be of advantage
– Basic knowledge in French or Italian
